Starfield is having difficulty surpassing the 300,000 Steam users at once, even a few days after the game’s official launch.

Despite the fact that Starfield attracted over a million players in Early Access thanks to sales on Steam and Xbox, it appears Bethesda’s most recent release isn’t dominating the Steam concurrent player charts. Of those, more than 230,000 people were using Steam’s Starfield Early Access at the same time. Therefore, there was a great deal of hope that the numbers would rise sharply following the game’s formal September 6th debut. However, days after that debut date and into Starfield’s first weekend of release, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

The number of concurrent players in Starfield at its high on September 6, 2018, was 250,823, as per the data supplied by SteamDB.

Starfield has since risen to an all-time high of 269,177. Additionally, Twitch viewers have decreased, averaging less than 100,000 from 186,289 during the platform’s start. It is odd that the video game community seems uninterested in Starfield, given the marketing and promotional blitz the film received before its big launch.

It should be mentioned, though, that Starfield is now the third-biggest Bethesda game to launch on Steam. Fallout 4 continues to hold the record for the largest Steam launch, behind only by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Furthermore, Starfield is the biggest overall launch for a Bethesda game that has more than six million players, according to earlier claims.

Starfield is still trailing behind Baldur’s Gate 3, even though Early Access saw over 230 thousand concurrent gamers. (Photo sourced from SteamDB.info)It should be emphasized that Starfield’s statistics for the Xbox Network and Game Pass are not included in the Steam concurrent player count, which is exclusive to that platform. The CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, said that Starfield had over a million concurrent users across all platforms. This suggests that more than 700,000 concurrent users were registered outside of the Steam statistics.

Even if this is true, Bethesda should be concerned that their biggest new game launch—the first original IP in 25 years—is trailing other recently released, highly anticipated AAA titles. According to the SteamDB information charts (as of this writing), both the peak and average concurrent player counts for Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 surpass those of Starfield. However, the game has been available for more than a month.

A growing number of users have voiced their disapproval of Starfield’s general dull gameplay. Particular issues have drawn attention to the procedurally produced planets’ lack of creativity. Others have brought up the uninteresting and forgettable NPCs that inhabit Starfield’s settings and vessels.

Even though Starfield is still the third-highest Bethesda game to launch on Steam, it hasn’t yet surpassed the 300K concurrent player threshold.Could the negative feedback regarding Starfield’s features and mechanics be a factor in the low number of concurrent Steam players? Can positive word-of-mouth from fans who are loving the extensive exploration and vast range of alternatives Starfield offers help it take off? Let us know what you think Starfield’s future holds in terms of upgrades and enhancements.
