Five Ways to Right-Click on A Mac Trackpad

Ben Patterson, my former coworker and friend, provided a response to a reader’s query regarding the several methods to right-click on a Mac trackpad on his blog. I was shocked to see that the post did not address my favorite way of right-clicking. Even though my technique is based on one of the four methods Ben described in his essay, I still consider it to be a unique and different way to right-click. Let’s talk about the five methods you can right-click on a Mac trackpad without further ado.

Even though my technique is based on one of the four methods Ben described in his essay, I still consider it to be a unique and different way to right-click. Let’s talk about the five methods you can right-click on a Mac trackpad without further ado.

1. Make Contact with Two Fingers and Click with The Thumb

This is the way a right click is started by your brave blogger. I just put my middle finger down next to my clicking finger and use my thumb to click to accomplish a right-click because my index finger is normally navigating the touchpad while my thumb is waiting to click. I use it because it takes the least amount of movement from my typical mouse-and-clicking stance; all I have to do is move my middle finger down to the trackpad’s surface, leaving my thumb and index finger in place.

2. Make a Double-Finger Click

You may use two fingers to click the trackpad instead of placing two fingers on it and then using your thumb to right-click.

3. Put the Lower-Right Corner in Place

You may designate the bottom-left corner of the screen as a right-click zone in System Preferences if you find the two-finger right-click techniques uncomfortable. Open the Apple menu, select System Preferences, then select Trackpad. You will then notice a Secondary click option after selecting the Point & Click menu item at the top. You may configure it to click in the bottom-right corner instead of the usual two-finger click location.

4. Designate the Lower-Left Quadrant

5. Press and Hold the Control Key While Clicking the Trackpad.

This last method takes two hands, but if you would want to use your off-hand in the process of right-clicking, you may do so by holding down the Control key while clicking the trackpad.
