Mortal Kombat lovers, prepare to be shocked! Mortal Kombat 1, the upcoming entry in the venerable genre, is poised to further the legacy it has painstakingly built since the early 1990s. But even that isn’t the best part. Dave Bautista, a WWE legend and a pillar of Hollywood, has jumped into the world of the game, and you better believe he’s coming in hard.
You might be familiar with Dave Bautista from his time as Batista in the WWE or from his role as Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. Now, in a pretty natural shift, Bautista featured in the most recent Mortal Kombat 1 live-action trailer as a librarian who can transform into a potentate of fighting rather than a vicious wrestler or vengeful alien. Although it differs from his past performances, given Bautista’s extensive expertise in acting and martial sports, it immediately seemed right.
This trailer, however, isn’t your typical sneak peek; it pays a sentimental homage to the iconic Mortal Monday ad from 1993. Remember the day when seeing a teenager yell “Mortal Kombat!” could make you drop $50 at the nearby video game shop? The cinematic experience is multiplied by ten in this reinvented trailer.
Bautista marshals his army in a variety of settings, from coffee shops to symphony orchestras, mimicking LiuKang‘s position in the game, who has since become a deity as a result of the events of Mortal Kombat 11. The video was directed by Tom Kuntz and shot by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Matthew Libatique.
And Bautista is a devoted supporter who isn’t just winging it, as he says:
I vividly remember the original Mortal Monday commercial, especially the iconic scream. That’s what started my journey as a fan of Mortal Kombat.
When they hired him, NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Games were acting in accordance with plan.
But let’s go right to the point: What can we anticipate from the game itself? The 25th installment of the series, Mortal Kombat 1, is due out on September 14 for early access and on September 19 for the general launch. This setup offers a game-changing experience in addition to a fanboy moment. It is based on the events of Mortal Kombat 11, where Liu Kang successfully reboots the whole universe, setting the stage for a brand-new yet nostalgically familiar Mortal Kombat universe. By the way, in this game, Scorpion and Sub-Zero are brothers.

From what we can tell, Mortal Kombat 1 is going to be a game that honors its illustrious past while forging fresh new avenues for both its plot and its players. This episode seems poised to be another blockbuster with marketing gimmicks like the one starring Dave Bautista spearheading its journey into the cultural mainstream yet again.

Mark your calendars, practice, and have your consoles ready. The new Mortal Kombat will be even more legendary than the original.
Speaking of NetherRealm Studios, the company recently disclosed that it is open to developing a Marvel vs. DC fighting game crossover. However, if you poll fans, they’d much rather see a Bloody Roar reboot.
