The popular run-and-gun game AlienHominid, which first debuted as an Adobe Flash game on Newgrounds in 2002, is set to make a comeback. This is just another example of how the nostalgia wave in gaming isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.
The Behemoth, the game’s developer, intends to rerelease Alien Hominid HD on a variety of platforms by the end of 2023, including Windows PCs, the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X.
The tale of the Alien Hominid itself is what makes this news so interesting. As a Flash game, which has since mostly become obsolete but was a staple of early 2000s internet culture, the game first made its imprint on the world. Because of the game’s popularity on Newgrounds, it was then ported to the PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, and later, Java-enabled phones and the fairly obscure Gizmondo portable in 2004. This is not to ignore its 2007 HD Xbox 360 release, which is still the only way to play the game on contemporary devices today thanks to Xbox backwards compatibility.
The re-release is just the beginning for The Behemoth. Alien Hominid Invasion is a “all-new re-imagination” that is currently under development. This follow-up is more than just a rehash of the first title. It is anticipated to debut alongside Alien Hominid HD and offers fresh gameplay concepts. Both games will be offered as a bundle, according to a blog post from the studio, which should make it more affordable for players to get started with both adventures. Unfortunately, neither the sequel nor its re-release will be accessible on PlayStation systems. This exclusion was explained by The Behemoth as being due to the workload of porting to numerous platforms at launch.
But why, nearly two decades after its first release, does this game still hold people’s attention? In order to pay homage to classic run-and-gun games like Metal Slug, Alien Hominid was created. The game’s yellow alien takes on waves upon waves of Secret Agents, and in addition to giving engaging gameplay, the opponent deaths are both brilliantly drawn and delightfully gory. A formula that worked well thanks to excellent gameplay mechanics and high-caliber animations.

The Behemoth co-founders Tom Fulp and Dan Paladin created the original Alien Hominid HD, but the re-releases are being handled by a larger Behemoth team, which has since worked on other well-liked games including Castle Crashers, Battleblock Theater, and Pit People. Their varied, imaginative, and skillfully executed work over the intervening years gives us yet more reason to anticipate high-quality output in both Alien Hominid HD and Alien Hominid Invasion.
In light of this, the upcoming release of Alien Hominid is more than just an homage to gamers’ fond memories of earlier games; it is evidence of the ongoing allure of a well-made gaming environment. Its competitive edge is demonstrated by the addition of enhancements like weekly and monthly leaderboards. However, the presence of the sequel, Alien Hominid Invasion, guarantees that this isn’t just a nostalgic trip but rather a welcome expansion of a beloved universe.
Ironically, Alien Hominid is one of the few cross-platform titles that won’t be released on the PlayStation first. As is the case with Baldur’s Gate 3, Xbox owners are typically the ones left waiting.
