- Netflix is reportedly in talks to secure the rights to the beloved Baldur s Gate series for its next project.
- Sources have not yet confirmed whether Netflix plans to develop a series, a movie, or both based on the Larian Studios IP.
- This move could potentially open the door to exploring more of the Forgotten Realms, a setting from the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG, and create exciting crossover opportunities with other projects set in the same world.
After the success of Twisted Metal and The Last of Us, video game adaptations have become very popular. For its upcoming endeavor, Netflix appears to be aiming for another classic video game.
Giant Freaking Robot reports that talks to purchase the rights to the Baldur’s Gate series are underway at Netflix. Once Henry Cavill left the Witcher series, the streaming service might be searching for its next major project. Longtime fans of the RPG series will undoubtedly be excited by this new revelation.
The existence of plans for a Netflix series or film based on the Larian Studios IP has not been disclosed by sources. Given that the RPG series has nine titles and more than a century’s worth of plot, it would make sense for the massive streaming service to take on a live-action series. Compared to movies, a well-crafted TV series would last for many years.
Baldur’s Gate might only serve as a gateway to the Forgotten Realms, the backdrop for the well-known tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. The Forgotten Realms have a plethora of more storylines that might be adapted for television or film. The Bioware and Obsidian Entertainment video game series Neverwinter Nights may become a major target in the future.
The Forgotten Realms will host more live-action projects than only Baldur’s Gate, it’s interesting to note. The Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves film starring Chris Pine and the future live-action remake will be in the same universe. A TV show and a sequel have been planned for Honor Among Thieves. It would be amazing to see a crossover in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
If Netflix were to get the rights to Baldur’s Gate, it might attract a sizable fan audience. The enormous streaming service will need to take care to live up to the high standards of the game’s devoted fan base, though. With The Witcher, Netflix perhaps gained some valuable insight on how to properly scale video games for smaller screens. It is our sincere hope that Netflix will treat the original material with integrity this time around.
Recently, Baldur’s Gate 3 was made available for the PC, Mac, and PlayStation. The front-runner for Game of the Year is also making an Xbox debut later this year, following problems with the console’s split-screen feature. One of the best-selling games of the year, the role-playing game attracted a record number of players in its first few weeks of release.
